Is there a likely component that is going bad for this to be happening?

I have switched the speakers and the sound persists so it is not the speakers. RX-600A has pre/main jumpers. Take out the jumpers and cross-connect channels with an IC cable (left pre to right main, right pre to left main) and see if the problem moved to the other channel. If it did, it is in the pre section, if it did not it is in the main amp section.
