Like so many adult things, such as living room décor or booze, I found the appeal of No. 5 inscrutable: "pretty," sure, but also inedible, sharp, bitter, and with no obvious referent to anything else in the world.
One may love Chanel No. 5 for its powdery florals and fresh soap smell, while another is wrinkling their nose at its harsh chemical-and-musk tang. With this perfume, you pay your money, you take your chances—but we recommend getting a sample before you buy.

No. 19 is a balsamic-green scent, compared to the aldehydic Chanel No. 5, the floral Chanel No. 22 and ambrette-green Chanel No. 18. The pure perfume and eau de parfum have a slight greenish tint, and the eau de toilette is pale green. Chanel No. 5. For the longest time, I was convinced I knew all about No. 5. No. 5 was fine, full of straw-tinted jasmine, awash with aldehydes, and charming, if fusty. But it wasn’t for me — or so I thought. Then, because the price was good, I bought an old bottle of the Extrait.
Overall, I think that Chanel No 5 is iconic but like many things from the past, has had it’s day. I’d recommend Chanel look to the likes of Dior’s Miss Dior and Givenchy’s L’interdit, who have kept the traditional fragrance name but totally reformulated the fragrance to appeal to the modern nose.
